SUGGESTED E-Mail to Friends My friend, I need your help. Do you remember polio? Or have you heard of the polio epidemic that once threatened America? Remember... Iron lungs, children in wheelchairs and little bodies with withered limbs may have passed into history as far as most people in this country are concerned. To them, the great "Polio Scare" of the 1940's and 50's is as much of a dusty artifact as 78-rpm recordings and a Philco radio console in the corner of the living room. Thanks to the Salk and Sabin vaccines were developed and given beginning in 1954. Today, the U.S. is polio free. In 1985, my Rotary Club as part of Rotary International began the Rotary PolioPlus initiative with the goal to eradicate polio throughout the world. Along with the World Health Organization, national governments worldwide, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, polio has been eradicated in 123 countries. However, polio is still crippling children and adults in four countries -- Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan. In our global society that means polio is only an airplane ride away. Yes, so long as one case of active polio remains anywhere in the world the threat of a polio outbreak remains even in our country! Especially if you consider that at least 15% of our area's children are NOT currently vaccinated against the plague of polio. That's where you come in. So far, Rotarians have invested over one billion dollars in the fight. Now, with the battle of polio eradication so close to conclusion, we need the help of people like you. Could I prevail upon you to make a contribution to this cause? It's easy. Just go to the special Web site WWW. endpolio.com and contribute whatever you can $100, $50, $25 -- even $10. will help. Thanks very much. Regards,
